Introduction to DL-Menthol
DL-Menthol is an organic compound also known as menthol. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a strong minty aroma.
DL-Menthol has several uses. First, it is a common flavor that is widely used in products such as chewing gum, mints, candies, beverages, and toothpaste to give them a refreshing taste and aroma. Secondly, menthol is also used as a medicine for relieving indigestion, gastrointestinal cramps, and headaches. In addition, it is used as a preservative and insect repellent.
DL-Menthol is mainly obtained by extracting the volatile oils from mint plants such as peppermint leaves. The extraction process can be carried out using techniques such as distillation, extraction or frozen leaching.
DL-Menthol is a saturated cyclic terpene alcohol present in mint plants or peppermint oil, which has a distinctive minty flavor and cooling effect, and is widely used in the fields of food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics [1]. When applied to the skin or mucous membranes, it stimulates the opening of transient receptor potential channels triggering intracellular calcium in-flow, which leads to the experience of a pronounced cooling sensation through the corresponding neural connections. Studies have shown that DL-menthol also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, improves subjective nasal patency, alters blood flow to the skin and reduces thirst sensation
